Alpha Omega is a chapter of California State, a division of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. DKG was founded in 1929 by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, a Professor of Education at the University of Texas. She founded the organization as a forum for women to study and advance the issues of gender equity, school legislation, excellence in education, good teaching conditions, networking, and financial assistance for women preparing to teach.
Alpha Omega was founded on May 31, 1947. There were 11 charter members. The chapter was made up of members from all over Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. By December of 1947 there were 29 members so interest abounded and recruitment was a high priority.
By 1962, Alpha Omega had been instrumental in the forming of five new chapters, either by our members splitting off to form local chapters or by our leadership encouraging women in other locales to found chapters.
Alpha Omega members could be characterized as STRONG, ENERGETIC, DETERMINED, BRIGHT AND WELL EDUCATED, CURIOUS, STUDIOUS, DEDICATED TO TEACHING, MOTIVATED TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE, and PROFESSIONAL IN ALL AREAS. Teaching was definitely a valued profession, not just a job.
All were working. Most were involved in a myriad of other organizations such as LWV, AAUW, Scholarships, Inc, Salvation Army, County Boards and Commissions. Volunteerism was a huge value. All were well educated, many from UC Berkeley and many with a master's degree. Members were not only classroom teachers, but educational consultants, school administrators, nurses, librarians at the local school district level and county.
Chapters banded together to support each other in joint studies and mini regional conferences. Members liked to have students perform or present at meetings to highlight what was happening in the classrooms and schools. Those attached to Cal State Hayward frequently drew on the resources there for student presentations, experts in certain fields. Those in other service organizations drew on those resources for research and presentations. Members brought the wider world into their studies and meetings.
Alpha Omega has always been a very dynamic chapter. We are actively involved in many community service projects such as Hayward Public Library Adult and Family Literacy and Career Online High School, providing funding to help their programs.
We also support CALICO (Child Abuse, Listening, Interviewing and Coordination Center) helping with fundraising efforts and providing books, blankets and toys for the children served. We have provided Goody Bags for new teachers and yearly scholarships and monetary awards for teachers. We have supported the Eden Early Childhood Development Center at the Eden Youth & Family Center, the Hayward Education Foundation with a Delta Kappa Gamma grant for a selected teacher, the Family Emergency Shelter Coalition and the Salvation Army.
Currently we have 29 active and 9 reserve members.
